    Default Update Part II

Here are some more pictures and new autocross videos.

The truck was pretty quick through the autocross course. But, I was running 300 treadwear BF Goodrich KDWs on the front so traction was really limited and understeer was plentiful thanks to the 285/335 front to rear tire split. I spent some time trying to tune the compression/rebound settings on the RideTech Triple Adjustable Coilovers, and by the time I was done the setup was more balanced. I think I am finally starting to get a handle on tuning the shocks to achieve better turn in rotation.

I made four runs and improved by about a half a second on each run. On my fourth and fastest run the GoPro flew off of the rear fender, but it suffered only a minor scratch! The GoPros are really neat and tough to boot.

The '51 Chevy truck that we bought for the door and fenders had a 216 in it, and it started after sitting for a bunch of years by sanding down the points and giving it fuel. No one local seemed to want the engine or its parts, and we planned to scrap the engine so we decided to see if it would blow up. It threw some of the babbitt rods and the bottom end failed in a blaze of glory when the oiling system quit working after running at full throttle for around ten minutes! At first, the old engine ran long enough to run out of fuel!

There's nothing like building up an old automobile from scratch and wiping out one of these Detroit machines... That'll give you a set of emotions that will stay with you... Know what I mean? Those satisfactions are permanent...

This weekend I am driving in an SCCA autocross, and next weekend is Goodguys Des Moines where I will have a chance to compete against some of the quickest trucks in the country.

    Default Goodguys Des Moines Recap

On Friday at the Goodguys Des Moines autocross I made the mistake of trying to bang the notoriously weak T5 3rd gear on the fast straight, and sheered all of the gear teeth off. I figured my weekend was over, and I was 200+ miles from home, but my Dad and I managed to limp the truck back to a relative's house. We drained the fluid and used a flexible magnet to remove the gear teeth before flushing it with diesel and ATF.

On Saturday I absolutely abused the T5 in 2nd gear bouncing off the 7,000 RPM rev limiter, but I managed to lay down some quick laps and snag another victory in the truck category.

On Sunday I cruised down the interstate about 200 miles home and the T5 held up.

It was hot and humid in Des Moines, and despite my trans issues I had a good time. I hit up the RideTech booth to weigh in on the corner scales with a curb weight of 2,384 pounds.

I have to thank Britt Marlof at RideTech for the shock tuning tips. He definitely knows his stuff and was the only guy running into the 47 second range. Using his tuning advice, I managed to turn out a succession of fast runs in the 48-49 second range.

Yes, and they are both really fast trucks with a ton of cool engineering. I will admit that I am more than a bit envious of their lightweight wide five setups and all of the other cool/expensive racecar technology. I did not run on Sunday so I am not sure if they improved on their times, but as for recorded times at the end of Saturday, Rob MacGregor put down a really smooth 48.249 and Brad Coomer a 50.899. My best clean run was a 49.019, but on my last run I had a mid/high 48 second pass with a gimme cone so I know my truck had more in it.

Here are two of my favorite videos from the weekend, a front suspension view:

    Default Missed You

Man, sorry I missed you Saturday. You were one of the reasons I wanted to go. I wanted to watch you clean up on the autocross course. Too bad about the transmission.

I'd LOVE to replicate what you have done with yours! A sleeper on the straights, and something nobody could keep up with in the twisties. Perfect combination

Glad to see you got it all put back together. It looks better than ever. Hopefully I'll see you on the autocross track at the show in K.C.
