  • Skate Shack build for the ODR!

Haven't done anything worth contributing with my rat rod, because my shop has been full of other projects.
haven't posted much here for a bit, so, if your interested, here is how I'm taking an old wooden grainery and giving it new life to keep the kiddos warm and the adults comfortable during skating parties Click image for larger version

Gonna spring for the tin to put on the roof, an investment of $450 should keep this shack in good condition for many more years... (I hate doing shingles)

    Stay tuned.
We're having a family get together Dec 27, so I gotta have this done and the dugout ready to skate on by then!
    Wish me luck!

Me working with wood means I need something to start the fire with...
When my wife and I got married, she had a few projects in the house she wanted me to do, and I warned her that working with wood was not a strong suit for me. I told her metal I can work with, wood not so much. After that 1st disaster, she hasn't asked me to do anything with wood since.
I understand the process, but.. I'm amazed when I see what people can do with the stuff. I have a friend that works well with that stuff.

Looks like your doing a great job. That is going to be pretty cool, I mean pretty warm. Gene

Thx gene, I'm much like you, I do not excel at wood work by any means, this is all pretty rough.
you can fill a gap with metal.

I have a bunch of stuff to do in the city for a couple days, so I cleaned the floor, finished up putting in windows and door, and applied a good heavy helping of linseed oil to the floor in an attempt at preservation. It takes time to dry so I thought it would be a good place to be while away.

OK, got a safety cage built around the wood stove, the shack is kinda small and I don't want to be branding any kids.
skidded it out of the shop and out to it's final location by the dugout, in the pasture.
our it up on blocks, leveled it out and was elated that the door latch stayed in alignment!
Did a dry run, hooked up the generator, made a fire, everything is as it should be👌
12" of ice, I have a bunch of work ahead of me now to get the ice surface prepped and lights strung up.

That came out pretty good! The kids might spend more time in the shack then outside skating, or maybe the adults will spend more time in the shack and the kids will be out skating.

Did you build it so you could stay warm and watch them skate??? LOL!

That's exactly what I did gene! I havnt put skates on for probably 25 years, but I already have my spot picked out where I can consume coco with bailey's staying warm whilst pointing and laughing at the kids falling down learning how to skate😂🤣

Got the ice cleared and trying to get a surface that resembles something you can skate on

-27? Yep, I'd be staying in the shack too! The fact is, I'd probably not even leave my house.

We have a city park here with a creek running through it. Back when I was a kid, they would clear the snow off the creek and us kids tour skate on the frozen creek. They had a heated shelter house we could warm up in. The cold didn't bother me near as much when I was in my early teens as it does now.
About 10 years ago, someone deemed that skating on the river wasn't safe anymore. Then they set a skating rink up on a baseball diamond, and the fire department would pump water into the rink and kids could skate on it in a few days.
a couple years ago they redid all the ball diamonds, so the set the skating rink up on one of the park's parking lot. Every time they relocate the rink, it gets smaller. I don't think it get used much here anymore, people are too busy with their phones. Gene
